Date: 13th June 2011

Time: 19:00 – 20:00.

Introduction

At the request of the Microfinance Club of Madrid, McKinsey&Company will be presenting and discussing learnings from their experience in 100+ projects related to financial inclusion – focusing in particular on the following three questions:

1) Where does financial inclusion stand today?

2) How can remaining gaps be addressed in light of recent experiences?

3) How is McKinsey involved in financial inclusion?

Speakers:

Ignacio Abengoechea: Ignacio is a Partner in McKinsey & Company and is based in the Iberian Office, where he leads the Corporate Finance Practice. He serves primarily clients in the banking industry in Iberia, the UK and Latin America. He has extensive experience serving clients in Corporate Finance related topics, particularly in corporate transactions (mergers and acquisitions) and integration processes. Last, but not least, Ignacio has been driving discussions and efforts related to financial inclusion in Europe, Middle East and Africa.

Aurelie Esperandieu: Aurelie joined McKinsey in 2005 after having worked for a network of micro-finance and micro-insurance organizations in India as a project manager – where she was also handling programs related to education and family development. After working for a few years with financial institution clients in Paris then New York, Aurelie transferred to McKinsey’s Social Sector Office, where she leads projects that require bringing together an understanding of financial services with public and social sector considerations. She is now based in McKinsey’s Iberia office.

McKinsey and Financial Inclusion:

According to recent research by McKinsey and Company, about 2.5 billion adults—over half of the world’s working-age population—do not have access to formal financial services. McKinsey’s research and client service builds on the success of microfinance industry to explore the benefits to society and business in providing every household with a full suite of modern financial products, including regulated and affordable savings, credit, insurance, and payments services. This session will address some of the barriers to serving the unbanked, such as distribution and risk, and innovative business models that are overcoming those barriers.

Sam Daley-Harris, Director at the Global Microcredit Summit, will give us the details of the next summit held in Valladolid (Nov 2011) , introducing us to one of the most relevant global events in the MF Sector.

The event will be held in English.

You can register HERE or emailing admin@clubmicrofinanzas.com with your name, surname, email address and profession.

Date: 11th May 2011

Time: 19:45 – 20.45.

Introduction

Sometimes we forget how revolutionary microcredit is. When banks lent to the rich microcredit programmes lent to the poor. When banks lent to men, microcredit programmes lent to women. When banks required a lot of paperwork, microcredit loans were illiterate-friendly. Etc…

The Microcredit Summit Campaign is passionate about breaking with business as usual in international development and encourages practitioners and other stakeholders to exchange views in order to find the best possible practices as a means towards ending global poverty. In this sense, we will address the purposes and activities of the MCS and have a glimpse of the this year´s Global Microcredit Summit held in Valladolid (Nov 2011).

What are the activities of the MCS? What impact does it have? All these questions will be discussed in the next Madrid Microfinance Club meeting using as an example the next Valladolid Summit.

Sam Daley-Harris is director of the Microcredit Summit Campaign. He is the founder of RESULTS, a grassroots lobbying organization that seeks to create the political will to end hunger and the worst aspects of poverty. He is also the founder of RESULTS Educational Fund, a 501(c)(3) organization dedicated to mass educational strategies to generate the public will to end world hunger and the worst aspects of poverty.

Sam is currently leading phase II of the campaign to help boost the UN’s Millennium Development Goals for 2015 and includes two of its own new goals: 1) reaching 175 million of the world’s poorest and 2) ensuring that 100 million families rise out of $1 a day poverty, lifting half a billion people out of extreme poverty.

Sam Daley-Harris is founder of RESULTS, an international citizens’ lobby dedicated to creating the political will to end poverty. Daley-Harris is also founder of the Microcredit Summit Campaign which surpassed its initial goal of reaching 100 million of the world’s poorest families in 2007. That same year Nobel Peace Prize Laureate Muhammad Yunus said: “….no other organization has been as critical a partner in seeing to it that microcredit is used as a tool to eradicate poverty and empower women than RESULTS and RESULTS Educational Fund’s Microcredit Summit Campaign.” Daley-Harris is author of Reclaiming Our Democracy: Healing the Break Between People and Government, about which Jimmy Carter said, “[Daley-Harris] provides a road map for global involvement in planning a better future.” In 2010, Ashoka founder Bill Drayton wrote, “Sam Daley-Harris is one of the certified great social entrepreneurs of the last decades. After building RESULTS, he is the person more than anyone else who has brought microcredit into focus across the world and precipitated action. One of his mechanisms has been a series of global microcredit summits. I think these are the first such UN-like events not run by the UN, or by any government for that matter.”

Introduction

Village banking is arguably the world’s most widely-imitated microfinance methodology and has been introduced by FINCA, a U.S. non-profit microfinance institution (MFI) whose purpose is to provide financial services to the world’s poorest families. Village Banking is a unique and transparent method of micro-finance that puts small loans as small as $50 in the hands of very poor families through community financial associations in which loans are guaranteed by the recipients themselves: A village bank is an informal self-help support group of 20-30 members, predominantly female heads-of-household.

The fact that village banking brings people together regularly in large groups offers institutions an efficient opportunity to provide additional, valued non-financial services. It is said that Village banking is particularly well suited for rural areas and that it tends to reach deeper than other microfinance methodologies.

How do Village Banks work? How are the Village Banking Programs managed and financed? What distinguished Village Banking??

All these questions will be discussed in the next MF Club meeting thanks to the presence of the founder of Village Banking, a program that can help lay a firm foundation that currently serves more than 740,000 clients in 21 countries.

Dr. John Keith Hatch is an American economic development expert and a pioneer in modern day microfinance.

After studying History from Johns Hopkins University where he obtained his BA, Hatch joined the Peace Corps in 1962 where he held different positions (from volunteer to director) in Colombia and Peru. This experience allowed him to get in touch with cooperatives and credit unions in the agricultural sector. Dr Hatch further specialized and obtained an MA in Economic History (1970) at the University of Wisconsin–Madison and a PhD in Economic Development (1973). In between (1970-71) a Fulbright grant allowed him to document traditional farming practices in Peru and experience community development in poor regions.

For the next 12 years he worked as a consultant in the design, management, and evaluation of mostly agricultural projects seeking to benefit the poor, eventually completing over 55 assignments in 28 countries of Latin America, Africa, and Asia. The gaps of this experience led him to the outline of a radically different approach to poverty alleviation: a financial services program that put the poor in charge. In 1984, Hatch finally created his own nonprofit agency -the Foundation for International Community Assistance (FINCA). He was inspired with the idea of FINCA.

The story of FINCA-which has been called a “World Bank for the Poor” and a “poverty vaccine for the planet”-is quite remarkable. FINCA currently operates over 800 village banking programs worldwide in 21 countries. Since 1984 the Agency has assisted over 1MM families, lending over $360 million (in 2007) to the world’s poorest families with a repayment rate of 98%, while also generating enough income to completely cover the operating costs of the field programs themselves.

Over 22 years with FINCA, Hatch served as president, and as chief of party for programs in El Salvador and Guatemala; he retired as FINCA’s director of research in 2006. Today, Hatch continues as a FINCA board member, advisor, speaker, lecturer, and fundraiser. He is continuing his research on the impact of Village Banking and is active in FINCA’s annual student symposium and research awards competition.

<!–[endif]–>

Hatch is also co-founder of the Global Microcredit Summit and the Alliance of Students Against Poverty (ASAP). In 2009 he received the Sargent Shriver Award for Distinguished Humanitarian Service by the National Peace Corps Association.
